How Mobilise Uplifts the Existing Support System
You might wonder: if Mobilise can help people directly, why do we work through charity partners instead of going straight to people experiencing homelessness?
The answer is simple: we're not here to replace the incredible work already happening. We're here to uplift it.
The Sector Is Struggling to Keep Up
The homelessness support sector in Australia is doing amazing work, but there's only so much any organisation can do. Support has to end somewhere—often at crucial points when people need it most.
This creates gaps where people fall through:
- After crisis accommodation ends but before stable housing begins
- When mental health treatment is needed but not covered
- When transport barriers prevent employment opportunities
- When small emergencies threaten to cascade into homelessness
We Step In Where Others Can't
Through our charity partners, we learn about people at critical moments in their journey. We step in when people need it most, so they don't fall through the cracks of the system.
We don't just prevent people falling through gaps—we provide them with a springboard to take the next step in their lives, reducing their chance of entering or re-entering homelessness.
Bridging What Services Can't
Social services provide essential support—housing pathways, crisis intervention, case management. But there's something they structurally can't provide: community belonging.
Harvard's Robert Putnam calls this "bridging social capital"—the connections that span across different groups in society. It's the difference between having a caseworker and having a neighbour who knows your name.
Here's what the research found: in a 2014 study, when researchers measured whether community diversity helped or hurt social trust, the answer depended entirely on one factor—whether people actually interacted across group lines.
No interaction? Trust declined.
Meaningful contact? Trust increased.
Professional services create pathways out of homelessness. Community volunteers create pathways back into society. Both matter. Mobilise exists in that second space—not replacing the system, but filling a gap it was never designed to address.
The Funnel Model
Think of the homelessness support sector as a funnel, with people in need trying to get to the other side.
Instead of helping people individually squeeze through, we're expanding the funnel itself—chipping away at bottlenecks so more people can get through. This means everyone, even those at the top of the funnel, benefits from our programmes.
When someone completes our Kickstarter programme and secures stable housing, that:
- Frees capacity at the crisis accommodation they left
- Reduces demand on ongoing support services
- Allows case managers to help others who need it
- Proves the system can work when gaps are filled
We're Not Reinventing the Wheel
Significant resources are already invested in the homelessness support sector. Our aim is to help this sector use these resources in the most efficient way possible.
What This Means for You
When you donate to Mobilise or volunteer with us, you don't have to pick between us and another charity.
By helping us out, you're directly helping the charities we work with, ensuring people in need remain at the core of what we do.
Our Charity Partners
