Outreach Checklist
Before You Head Out
Trust your gut - If something feels off, it probably is
Meet in public spaces - Coffee shops, parks, community centers
Keep your phone charged - You need to be able to call for help or support
Know your boundaries - It's okay to say "I don't know" or "I can help you find someone who can"
Listening Skills
Ask open questions - "What's going on for you?" not "Are you okay?"
Reflect back what you hear - "It sounds like you're feeling..."
Don't force it - If someone doesn't want to talk, that's fine. Your presence still matters.
You're not there to fix - You're there to listen, connect, and help them find resources if they want them
After Outreach
Post in Heading Out - Let everyone know you're back safely
Don't name names - Protect people's privacy and dignity
Share the weird bits - Funny moments, strange conversations, unexpected connections
Debrief if you need to - Use Brief + Debrief for tougher experiences
Remember
You're not expected to be a counselor, social worker, or superhero. You're a human showing up for other humans. That's enough.
