Drive for Life — Stafford & Lawnton, QLD
Drive for Life is a Salvation Army program that pairs volunteer mentors with young people aged 16–25 to help them get their driver's licence. In Queensland, learner drivers need to complete 100 hours of supervised driving — a huge barrier for young people who don't have access to a car, a supervising driver, or the money for lessons.
Locations
📍 Stafford Corps — 32-54 Hayward St, Stafford QLD 4053
📍 Lawnton — Brisbane's north
The program also operates in Bundaberg and Gympie.
Why It Matters
Not having a licence is one of the biggest practical barriers to employment and housing stability. Without a licence, getting to work, attending appointments, and maintaining a tenancy all become harder. Drive for Life removes that barrier by providing the vehicle, insurance, training, and mentors — all the young person needs to do is show up.
Volunteering as a Mentor
To volunteer, you need:
A current unrestricted driver licence
Two hours per fortnight (or per month)
A willingness to be a positive role model
The program provides fully insured vehicles, training, and ongoing support. You don't need to be a driving instructor — just a reliable presence.
The Stafford program has around 70 students and 20 mentors each year, with at least 5 new referrals coming in daily. More mentors are always needed.
