Breaking down problems with SCQ

The SCQ framework provides you with the context to come up with a specific and actionable problem to solve. This may be used when coming up with a new program, breaking down a case, or when trying to solve a problem your organisation is facing.

Using SCQ, allows you to get a macro to micro understanding of the drivers of your problem. Using this, you will be able to formulate a solution that effectively addresses the key issues.

Situation: provides the general context of your problem. It provides an overview of the environment/market/organisation, which gives a backdrop to the complication that has arisen.

Complication: Describe a specific problem that the subject of your case is facing. Providing statistics or figures will help illustrate the extent of the problem and the impact it is having.

Question: A well framed question will provide you with a clear problem to solve for. Make this specific and actionable, providing a foundation for you to work from. If the question is too general or too specific, it won’t adequately address the key complication.
